Firstly, your rating will go down. If you don,t see your games through to the end and exit out in the middle your value as a serious player will go down. Your opponents will be annoyed that you opted out and this can be bad for the next time you play. You dont want to upset the locals.
Secondly, you obviously won't win any big money this way! If you don't finish the game you have no chance of winning. Isn't the money a huge reason why you are here? Understand that plenty of virtual tournaments require several hours to play.
Thirdly, you don't want to stress yourself out. If you have no time limits you as a poker player will be much calmer and more focused than if you were rushed. If you know you have to go somewhere in 10 minutes that isn't exactly going to help your game.
Lastly, no one around you will take you seriously. Forget the strangers online who may not interest you. What about your own family (or roommates or kids etc). You want them to take you seriously, don't you? If they see that any time they interrupt you just log off they will deduce that what you are doing is not really important. This is bad on many levels. They won't respect your poker playing and they will continue to bother you when you play online poker. Then, one day, if you actually want to finish a game, they won't allow it.
In conclusion, definitely take time to play a good deal of poker. Experience terribly important, and If you do not practice, don't expect you'll get better. Create a calm and easy going environment for you to play poker in and you will see the immediate results.
